It’s once again YOUR TURN! 🙂 Here is an e-mail I received from Rae a few days ago:
I am just getting started in couponing, and am already saving a lot, but I have to say that my coupons are a mess. I cannot seem to find an organization system that works for me and was wondering if any of your readers might wnat to share what works for them.
Thanks!
Rae

I use a binder with 4×6 photo holder sheets! I found them at walmart in the photo/part area, where the albums and such are. Might want to check with your local store though. I have many people comment on my binder on how easy it is to find things with the larger pockets. I found that the baseball card holder doesn’t work for me. The slot are too small for the coupons alot of times. I LOVE my binder. I use a zip one that had 2 front packets that holds my calculator, pens and sissors. I use tab dividers to organize it alot. It took me about 2 hours to get it together the very first time but it’s only abut 30 mins every week to clip and organize my new coupons. I have it set so when I go into the store I can go from left to right and know just where everything is according to my coupons. I usually shop on Wens or thurs, right after the flyers come out for our stores here in Colorado.
I took a couponing class one night and found that I was more organized with my binder then the person teaching the class was. She even took my binder and showed it off to the following class. I sent to out local City Market on Monday and sent $65 and saved $175 with all the instore values, coupons and e-coupons that I have loaded onto my card. I bought my months worth of meat as well. The casheirs always cringe when I come in since I always have at least 50 coupons. Currently I am unemployed and LOOKING but our town is very small and not many people are hiring right now. I am on food stamps for me and my daughter and have to get the most out of them so that’s why I have gone to so many coupons. I have coupons on the brain. I even dream about cutting coupons.

I have a huge box with mini file folders. I blogged about it once a long time ago.

It has some photos to show what I mean.

I use the cloth holder mentioned above, clipping only the coupons I know for sure I’m going to use at some point, then I put the rest of the unclipped inserts in hanging folders sorted by month. Then, each week when the sales come out, I pull the specific coupons from my cloth holder and clip those from the inserts that match the sales. I make a list of the items I’m going to buy from each store and paperclip the coupons with it. I also keep each store’s shopper card and any rainchecks in a plastic wallet photo holder (the multi-sleeve flip ones) in the front of the cloth holder so that I have them whenever I need them.

I have tried the baseball card holder and binder scenario that seems to work for so many, but I just can’t keep on top of it. I am still using a cloth coupon holder with cards/ tabs (bread, baking, cereal, canned foods, frozen items, etc.). This is what works best for me, but I agree with another poster who says it’s kind of a pain to be at the store searching through your “file” for the right coupon. I cut out all the coupons I might use and keep them with me in my coupon holder. Basically, I’m still searching too.

Walmart and Target have the baseball card holders at the front by the registers and books/magazines next to the baseball and football cards. They run about $5.99 for 35 pages (9 pockets each page) and I bought two packages to get me started.

thank you for your help. where can i find the baseball card pocket holders? I have tried the keeping my coupons in the inserts and dating them but then i get to the store and realize i could have used a coupon that was not with me.

I also use the binder with baseball card inserts. I started doing it this way right from the beginning and I can’ see any other way to do it (photo here: https://www.savingsadventures.com/2011/01/my-coupon-bible.html). I keep all my current flyers in the back for reference. I have a notebook that I write down what I want to purchase at each store with prices, how many I want to purchase, etc and what the estimated end total should be. I also have a smaller binder (that I just won on a blog) with ziplock bags in it. I have the name of each store on one of the baggies. I then put the coupons I want to use at each store in the corresponding baggie. it makes life much easier once you get into the stores. I also bring my full binder in the store with me just in case I forget anything or if there is a sale I missed or that was unadvertised.

The coupon binder with baseball card holders organized by category is the only thing I found that worked for me. I tried clipping them all and putting them in an accordion file according to category, but when I went to the store or even tried to put them in envelopes to take to the store ready to go, I had to flip through them all to find the one I was looking for. I also tried saving the inserts in a file folder system and then just clipping the ones I needed before I went. But then I didn’t always have the inserts with me so if an unadvertised sale came up, I didn’t have the coupon to match it with. So after all these things, I find the easiest thing to do is clip all the coupons I know I’ll use and think I’ll use and put them in the card holders. This way I can see them all and I just take my binder with me to the store, with pockets for each stores’ coupons and ads. So my preference is definitely the coupon binder. It takes more time up front than filing the inserts, but then I always have them ready to go when I want to go to the store.

I have a couple of ways I sort my Qs. First, I have binders with pockets in them for the paper inserts. I rotate these out based on month. Next, I have a small accordian folder for loose Qs where I file by product name. And lastly, I have a small binder I take with me to the store. In this I have pencil bags each with a specific store name on it. Inside the bag, I place my value card, Qs, and list of scenerios.
This system works for me b/c I don’t typically get things NOT on my list. If you find a deal on something and want to look through all of your Qs to see if you should buy it, my approach probably won’t work for you.

Hi Rae
I put my coupons in 3 envelopes with Personal, Household items and Food on the front and then I sort and put them in the catagory that matches!!!
