Many of us have done it, at least I know I have…the speed limit is 55 so that means we go 60. I’m not quite sure why this is…I guess it is just engrained in us to push the limits. Well the next time you want feel like taking advantage of that speed cushion you might want to think twice…
USA Today had an interesting article about how speed cushions may be a thing of the past in many areas of the country. Due to the slump in the economy, many municipalities are scrambling for money and speeding tickets are a good source of it. This recently proved true for a friend of ours who got a speeding ticket (not a warning, a real ticket) for going just 3MPH over the speed limit! When my husband shared that with me I almost hit the floor! 3 over…that is nuts! I know I will be keeping a much closer eye on that speedometer.
What about you, have you noticed this speed crackdown in recent months?

My family just had this conversation this weekend regarding an article my dad read saying the "speed cushion" has decreased nationally to increase revenue. We all know folks who have received traffic tickets lately so I think they're cracking down on everything — like when I didn't use my blinker to signal a lane change late at night on a virtually empty I-25. That cost me $70. OUCH.

Wow 3 over is rather ridiculous, as that could easily be a speedometer difference too!
She should think about protesting it.

That's very interesting. My dad is a retired cop and he always said that 5 over is safe, so I usually do. I know that recently when I was going slightly over the speed limit I have seen cops with the radar out and they didn't pull me over, so I still feel safe going at least 5 over. When I was going through a small town though out on the plains, the small town cop pulled me over going 7 over right before I hit the speed limit decrease.
