One topic that I’m asked about frequently during my couponing classes is where the best Colorado grocery outlet stores are. I’ve been intending to write a post on the subject for quite some time now, so when reader Angela reached out about wanting to share her experiences in saving at these stores I was thrilled!
Angela did a phenomenal job of giving us the run-down on the places that she discovered. I would love for this post to become a discussion because I know you savvy shoppers have some more hidden treasures to share! ๐
Without further adieu, I’ll let Angela take it away…

A carb-lover’s dream. These are all over the place, so just highlighting one that I frequent. Without coupons, these brands in the grocery store are typically priced higher than my budget, so the bakery outlet is awesome. While their newer arrivals can still be a little high, there are a couple tables towards the back with bread currently priced around $1.79/loaf. Depending on the day, they also have bagels, pita, donuts, hamburger/hotdog buns, and any number of other items for reduced prices. At checkout is when you really feel like you’re winning the lottery though. For every $8 you spend, you get to pick a free item from the designated racks by checkout.
If you bring the reusable bag, another free item. And then there’s a punch card, which currently gives you another two free loaves of bread for every $40 purchased. I’d take a picture if we hadn’t already started eating a bunch of it, but yesterday we scored 3 loaves of Oroweat bread, 4 bags of Thomas bagels, 2 bags of Entemann’s mini-donuts, a 12-count bag of large hamburger buns, a 12-count bag of premium brat buns, and a 8-count bag of Sara Lee hamburger buns for a total of $16, and it would’ve been more if I’d remembered a reusable bag or two, or filled up the rest of my punch card (next time will be even better!).
Grocery Salvage
The Friday Store, 5636 Newland Way, Arvada, CO;
Hours
Fridays and Saturday 9:00am-5:00pm
For those with adventurous taste buds and a skinny wallet, this may be just the place for you. A very offbeat find that admittedly isn’t for everyone, this place is in the “grocery salvage” category. They have them around the state and around the country, in case this little place isn’t nearby. This particular place carries a variety of foods that seem to be a combination of overstock restaurant bulk items, canned goods that are sometimes nearing expiration, dented boxed items, or interesting flavors that just didn’t sell well. Some of it is too eclectic for my taste, but this store is hands down the best price I’ve gotten for high-end cheeses. The last three times I’ve gone, I’ve gotten either parmesan, asiago or romano cheeses for $2.50-$3/lb, shredded, shaved or in the wedges, depending on the day. They always have lots of frozen meats, a great refrigerated cheese selection, sometimes even breads, produce, coffee, farm eggs, and more. Just keep in mind that you’ll rarely be able to find the same thing twice. It’s certainly worth a peak for curiosity’s sake, at least! Some the items are less at traditional stores with the right coupon match-ups, but if you know your prices, you’re sure to find some treasures in the mix.
More outside the box grocery savings tips from Angela…
Farm Connections
I haven’t ventured much into crop shares or co-ops, so would love for you experienced folks to chime in here. But what I have done is utilized connections with a couple of farmers to obtain all-natural grass-fed beef, natural pork, free-range chicken and farm fresh eggs at reasonable rates. It’s tough to do without an extra freezer, so we’ve since invested in a large one because you almost always have to purchase in bulk to make this work. We’re able to eat steak on a hamburger budget, and eat free-range eggs for less than the store brand. It sometimes involves a bit of a drive, but we treat it as a field trip to show the kids how much work goes into the food in our fridge and the farmers we know have been really gracious to let the kiddos pet the animals and help gather eggs. It’s worth the drive for us. If you have friends or family with farm roots, might be worth your time to ask around.
Retail Treasures
There are a number of stores with unusual food sections in them — Ross and Big Lots, to name a couple. I’ve gotten some sweet deals on balsamic vinegar, gourmet ethnic foods, coffee, olives, you name it. Just takes a quick detour and before I know it, I’m much more excited about the sweet deal on gnocchi than whatever it was I came in for.

Just moved here from east coast, came on vacation never left. I love My Colorado been a dream since I was little, 44 yes old I made IT. Ok, are outlet stores still around….I like I can find many vintage things here

If you want meat, you can also contact meat lockers. There is one in Hudson, Wiggins, Deer Trail, Simla, Flagler…They know local ranchers and can give you numbers. Also the local plants might just have some they sell. Hudson is good for jerky, quarter sections of a pig, and many different sausages.

In regards to the Bakery Outlet stores, they usually have one day of the week designated for “double punches” which means, if you spend $5, for example, you get credit on the cards for $10. The days are different for each location.
I have found the Denver location to have the best prices of the two locations I have frequented, as well as the best selection, and that might have to do with the fact that they are located in the city or that they are actually a bakery. The double punch day for the Denver location is Tuesday.
While the bakery outlet workers will typically tell you only to freeze the freshly baked products, I have been freezing the items found on the discounted tables and “free” items for years and I have never had a problem. Any bread items, including english muffins and bagels, can be frozen by putting them in plastic bags. I usually put 3 or 4 loaves in 2 layers of plastic grocery bags, labeling the outside, of course, and then pulling them out one by one when we finish a previous loaf. Just lay them on the counter to thaw out. I have never had the quality or taste of the bread change from doing this, even when I over-purchased and had frozen bread in the freezer for 6 months.
I love the Bread Outlets, obviously! Thank you to Angela for putting this list together and to Leslie for the Esh’s recommendation! I live in Loveland now and I had no idea there was a discount grocer here!

We get our grass fed beef from an operation in Bellvue, Colorado. They have many options and we have been very pleased with the flavor and cuts! https://www.barncatservices.com/beef/index.html

There is a discount grocery store called Esh’s in Loveland, Greeley, and I believe Dacono. They are the dented-cans, squished boxes kind of place. I used to go there all the time, but find couponing is actually a better deal. What I do love is the really cheap produce (a bag of 5 Avocados for $1.89!, 3 pack of Romain lettuce for $1 or less), and they usually have yogurt for cheap too. You can find out more and locations at their website https://www.eshsdiscountgroceries.com/

Thanks for the great article. I really need to get back to the Bakery Outlet. I used to go there all the time. I have also used Bountiful Baskets and was very impressed with the produce.

I occasionally shop at Robb Inc. on Main Street in Brighton. It’s definitely not glamorous, but it’s another grocery outlet store with dented cans and boxes that are close to expiring. I’ve heard a lot of people shop there for their dog food, which greets you with quite the odor when you first walk in the door. No glamour, just good prices.

Are there addresses or a website for the Bimbo Bakery Outlets? I’d love to stock up on cheap tortillas…I make my own, too, but that can be pretty time-consuming.

Angela,
Do you have a contact for the grass fed beef? I would love to get ahold of a farmer that has it for sale. Thank you , Angela.
Angela says
Hi Angela! Still developing my farm contacts for more year-round needs, as right now it’s feast or famine since I’ve purchased from only a couple small family-run farms that butcher and sell only 1-5 cows a year or have 50 dozen eggs available at once then none during molting seasons. One thing that I’ve thought about trying is contacting either sale barns or 4-H clubs to find more small local farms that are even closer to the Denver area to support (as my current contacts are a bit too much of a drive when I just need eggs or a few chickens). Anyway, not sure if that’s much help, but I will pass along my finds if I can locate some good leads.
