Ten years ago my cell phone bill was about $30 a month. Now it has crept all the way up to $125.50 per month, and that is just for one phone! As many of you know, I advise everyone to go through their bills at least twice each year to identify savings opportunities and this is one that I’ve had on my radar since my contract expired with Verizon back in February.
A few weeks ago I was chatting with a some friends about cell phone providers. One friend mentioned that her family had recently switched over to a Walmart Family Mobile plan and were very happy with it. I had never really thought about checking Walmart for mobile plan deals.
When this opportunity came for me to try out Walmart Family Mobile, of course I jumped on it! They provided me a great phone to test out the service and I headed over to my local store this afternoon to pick up an activation pack and to check out the plan pricing.
I almost fell over when I learned that for just $39.88 Walmart Family Mobile has unlimited plans (with unlimited talk, text and web) or for $29.88 unlimited talk and text (great for new users and kids). What am I paying $125 for month for? I don’t even get unlimited minutes or text right now!
The phone that I received, the Concord, is also on rollback for $79.88 (it was $99.88). They also had some nice MyTouch devices for $129.88 (down from $149.88).
The best part though is that not only did Walmart have some great plans at great prices, but they also do not require a contract. NO CONTRACT! That is a major plus in my book! 🙂
Now, for the test. I am going to be leaving very soon for a fun packed trip to Orlando, Florida. Although the trip I’m sure is going to be a blast, I will still be doing quite a bit of work while I’m there, so staying connected through my phone is going to be so important! Can Walmart Family Mobile keep up? I hope so and I’ll be back in a few weeks to let you know! 😉

Thanks for the info. We are looking for a better priced plan without a contract. I’ll be heading to my Walmart tomorrow to check it out. Can’t wait to hear how it works out over your vacation. Hope you and yours have a great one!

Hi Jennie,
So I have the exact plan you are talking about. We have had it for over a year now and it has been great and saved us “a lot” of money. Just a couple of things to note, one is that you can’t get short code text messages on this plan without purchasing the extras pack. So the mobile coupons you get from target and so forth you will no longer get unless you purchase the extra data pack or whatever they call it. Also at least on our phones we don’t have call waiting. We have called on this and they said it is dependent on the phone but we have nice smart phones and I can’t imagine that this feature is not available. We also have another friend who said she doesn’t have call waiting either. Not a big deal but just thought I would give you a heads up. Walmart also has a Verizon plan with no contract, unlimited call, text, and web for $50/month. The only catch is that if you are a previous Verizon customer they will not let you keep the same number. I look forward to hearing how it works out for you. Best of luck and happy vacationing to you! You deserve it!

That is a really cheap price for a cell phone plan. I might need to check into that 🙂
