My parents bought my children a little water table a few years ago and it has been a hit ever since. I have always wanted to get them a sandbox, but they can be so expensive- not to mention they don’t always have tops on them, so water and creatures can constantly invade the sandbox! My husband and I decided to make my children a sandbox using very few tools.
First, we purchased a type of Rubbermaid tote that had a lid and wheels. Then, we filled sand into the box that we purchased from Lowe’s. Lastly, we added some $1 toys and voila! The sandbox cost us a little over $20 when all done. The best part is that it has a lid. We can take the sandbox to grandparent houses or wherever we need.
The only drawback is that it is right on the ground, so we have to prop it on a table in order for the kids to not have to bend over constantly. The do-it-yourself sandbox is a great addition in our home! My kids absolutely love to go outside and play with the sandbox. What a great an economical tool!

I did something similar for my daughter when she was younger but I used rice. She loved it. I laid an old shower curtain under it and we would sit there forever pouring and hiding toys in the rice. Then, when you are finished, you just pick up the shower curtain and dump whatever fell out back in the tub. Great idea!
