Just like items at the grocery store, there are many other products that go through price cycles during the course of a year. The contributing factors can include weather, holidays, the school year, conferences and many other things.
Here is a round-up of some of the products that you should consider purchasing this month. Now, I will say that just because this is the best time to buy them that does not mean that I’m advising you to buy something you do not need. It is very important to consider “wants” versus “needs” and of course your budget before making a purchase, especially big purchases like automobiles and electronics.
Winter Clothing
For many of us January is really the “thick” of winter. Retailers on the other hand are already looking ahead at spring. Keep an eye out for deals on winter coats, winter suites, and winter accessories.
Exercise Equipment
January is the month for new years resolutions and retailers will be playing into the thousands of people who will be making a vow to get in shape. Watch for lots of bargains on exercise equipment, large and small this month. Also, if you are able to wait until early spring, that is going to be the best time to buy used exercise equipment since many resolutions will have been abandoned by then. 😉
Electronics
There are a bunch of Electronics conventions this month so all of the new models will be out very soon. If you don’t mind having last year’s camera, game, or DVD player now would be a great time to buy!
Jewelry
We are in between Christmas and Valentines day, so we can expect to find some nice markdowns on earnings, rings, necklaces and more.
Children’s Toys
Make sure to shop early for this one as the good deals will be snatched up quickly.
Bikes, Motorcycles and Boats
Most people wouldn’t even consider buying these items in the middle of winter, but retailers are still looking to clear out last year’s models to make room for new inventory.
Home Remodeling Service
If you are considering doing an indoor remodel project this year, January is a great time to get some quotes. Contractors will often times me more available and lower priced as they will not be working on outside projects like decks in most parts of the country.
Air Conditioners
I know, I know…this is the last thing that you are thinking about this month, but you should be! Demand for air conditions is down and that means that prices are down too.
Linens and Other Household Items
January is the the month for white sales. Keep an eye out for price drops online and in retail stores.
Houses
This one will vary based on your region, but winter time is historically the slow time of year for house sales. If you are in the market for a new house, it might be worth spending a little extra time with your realtor this month.
Wrapping Paper
Not all wrapping paper that will be marked down this month has to be used for Christmas. Look for deals on paper that can be used for birthdays and other occasions.

So glad to see you post this! I am a licensed real estate agent and I believe that winter is an excellent time to start shopping for your next home. Sellers are likely to be more motivated because showings will have subsided, but there is still plenty of inventory to choose from. Buyers should not let moving during the school season stop them from cashing in. It can really save them a bundle!
