I wanted to put a quick note up to warn all of you to NOT visit the American Apparel website that is part of today’s Groupon deal.
I had my post all typed up and went to visit their store locator quickly and was appalled and the pretty close to pornographic pictures that are scatted all over the website. It is extremely disappointing to me that Groupon would promote this deal. It is sometimes sad what has become acceptable in our society. 🙁
Lisa Stone says
I contacted Groupon and this was their reply
“We’re sorry if you find American Apparel’s website inappropriate–it’s never our intention to offend our customers. We know that American Apparel probably isn’t for everyone. The majority of our customers have been excited about today’s deal–we leave the decision to shop with them up to you.
As always, we really appreciate your feedback. All of these comments are logged and this helps us determine which types of deals to run again or to stay away from. Hopefully we’ll win you back with tomorrow’s deal!”
I replied with “Please consider placing an advisory – something like ‘may be unsuitable for small children, or viewing in the workplace’.”
Thank you Jennie for being strong in your faith and values and sharing this with us. I think it is important to protect children, and husbands from sites that appear safe until further inspection.
Cindy says
Hooray for you! I also will not be visiting their website due to the responses here. By the way, I am making that decision on my own because of my own values. It is just refreshing to know that so many others agree and live accoring to Christian values.
Karla says
Thank you so much posting the warning about what was on the site. There is so much garbage in the world that it’s nice to see warnings about this kind of stuff. Thanks for upholding your values and being true to your Christian Values! Wish more people in the world had good moral values and lived by them!
Jessica says
I applaude you for sticking to your values and not apologizing for it!
Bernadette says
I am so happy that you feel the same way I do about all this vulgarity in our society that is considered acceptable. I’m glad to know there are others who feel the same way I do about scantly clad young people. Why can’t we leave something to the imagination? After I read your warning, I didn’t bother checking out American Apparel’s site and I just deleted the Groupon offer for today. Thank you, Jennie.
AMY says
Good for you Jennie! This is your website and you have never hid or apologized for your values or beliefs. Maybe this world would be a better place if we all did what was morally right and not what was politically correct.
Miranda says
You promote Victoria Secret, how is that any different?
Jennie says
Miranda~
That is a very fair question and to be honest I have considered stopping to promote VS on several occasions. For me, there are three differences:
1. VS is not placing children in seductive poses
2. VS does not have full nudity on their website (although I will admit that it is very close to being the case)
3. Most people know what to expect with VS because undergarments are their primary product…American Apparel is a clothing store. I certainly didn’t expect to see nude pictures when looking at their store locator page and I know that many others didn’t either.
Andrea says
I agree with you, expecially #3! I didn’t expect to see such pictures, but I do know if I receive a VS catalog what type of pictures are going to be inside. This website I felt was miss leading by the name.
Sarah Johnson says
Please remember that not everyone has the same “values” as you do and that you have a varied audience. There are a lot of couponing websites out there, and due to these comments, I am not sure that I will be back.
Jennie says
Sarah~ I am sorry you feel that way, but hope that you understand that this is my website and therefore I have the right to express my thoughts and opinions. In my opinion the American Apparel website is disgusting. The owner of the company has been in all sorts of trouble with sexual harassment etc. I do not understand how anyone could find placing children in sexual positions to model clothing an acceptable practice regardless of what your values are.
You are correct that there are lots of couponing websites out there so I hope that you are able to find one that suits you better. As for me and Bargain Blessings I refuse to promote or support something that clearly goes against what I believe to be right.
Andrea says
Kudos Jennie very well said!
Erin says
I have to agree with Sarah on this one, I was offended that you (Jennie) said NOT to go to the website who are you to tell me what sites to visit. I’m always amazed at how people also like to tell a company how to run their business. (contacting Groupon and wagging the finger at them). People need to get a grip and see what is truly important in the world.
Lexie says
What is truly important in this world then? Is not having good values important? Look where our world is because not everyone has such values!!! If everyone had such values, this world would be a much better place! Think about it!
Julia says
What’s important to me is God, my husband, my children, my country and my integrity!!!!! That’s just me. I’m curious what’s important you?
Anneke says
Thanks for the heads up. I opened the email before reading this and decided not to go to the site simply from the fact the girl in the email pics was so obviously braless. I am so glad I didn’t now. I will also be complaining to Groupon.
Sasha says
It is American Apparel that has the founder/owner with the bad taste. The program I saw was talking about the sexual harassment problems at their company and also all the sexual and strange images they use to sell clothes. Blech!!!!
Amanda Biel says
Seriously, thank you so much for posting this. I thought i was the only one? I was visiting other mommy blogs and saw this deal posted on every one of them. I appreciate you having morals in this area. So much of the world looks past this today because they’ve almost i think, become “numb” to the issue. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Lois says
Thanks for the heads up Jennie. I certainly don’t want to do to a site like that. One of the reason’s I will not support Abercrombie, their ads offend me.
Linda says
Thank you, Jennie, for the warning and for your stand against such stuff. This is one of the MANY reasons why I love your site and appreciate your SO much!!!
Victoria says
That is disgusting! There is a woman pictured topless and I mean absolutely topless! This is completely innapropriate…thanks for the heads up.
Melissa says
I agree! Thank you for the warning!
Lori says
Thank you, Jennie, for warning us all and for upholding your standards. It is wonderful to see that there are others who agree that this type of advertising is completely inappropriate.
Lisa Stone says
I contacted Groupon and asked them to better screen their deals. I informed them that if they continued to support places like this, I wouldn’t be using their site anymore.
Angela M says
I’m going to complain to Groupon. I get that they want to be all-inclusive for deals, but that is NOT a family-friendly site, and they should have made a warning. I mean, those pictures on any other site would be labeled “NSFW” (not safe for work), and those are sites with practically no standards at all.
I encourage everyone else to complain as well. My little boys were in the room, and I’m just glad they weren’t looking at my computer when I clicked over to see if it was a deal I wanted.
Jenny says
This morning when I got the groupon deal in my e-mail I clicked, cause I thought it said American Eagle. When I looked at the pictures I was disgusted as well. I am so glad that I am not the only one thinking that this morning. I have 3 children 5 and under, and it saddens me how lenient our society is becoming. I commend you Jennie, Thank You!!
Heather Osgood says
Thanks for letting us all know! To Sasha: Are you referring to Groupon or American Apparel as being odd? I want to know which one to stay clear from!
Dianna says
I didn’t go to their website, but I want to say THANK YOU for having some standards!!! I appreciate your site even more 🙂
Sasha says
OMG. I see what you mean. I just had to check the website to see even though you said not to. I remember hearing this company was quite odd and the owner/creator was strange and into these kinds of images. I think there was a 20/20 or 60 minutes episode about him and his weird company. I remember there was some sexual harassment going on too! Yikes. 🙁 Bad news!!!!
Kristy says
Thanks for the info! I won’t be pulling up their site!
